MTN Inter Regional Tournament kicks off in North

Release date:6/15/2009
Kampala, Uganda: Thousands of soccer lovers in the northern town of Lira are set for a 6 day soccer tournament starting today, Monday June 15th 2009.
The regional tournament last held in 1968 is sponsored by the telecommunications company, MTN Uganda, and is set to bring together a total of six teams with the winners walking away with trophies and medals among other prizes.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, MTN Brand and Sponsorship Manager, Aggrey Kagonyera said that MTN had decided to sponsor the tournament to help identify talent right from the grassroots.   “We hope the tournament will act as a platform for young people to showcase their talent.” he said. “We take pride in being part of the process of developing soccer not only at the continental level but also at the grassroots level. He pointed out that talented soccer players like Michael Essien, Didier Drogba and Samuel E’to did not come from another planet but that they owe their success to tournaments such as this in their home countries.”

Through the regional tournament the country’s football governing body FUFA will be able to lay a foundation for the future of soccer in the country. Super Division sides can also use the tournament to scout for talent. The tournament has six teams participating from Buganda, Kampala, West Nile, Mid North, Western and Eastern and is set to run from 15th to 21st June.
