Judge throws out tax evasion charges against MTN Uganda

Kampala, Uganda - Judge Lameck N. Mukasa of the Criminal Division of the High Court of Uganda has declared criminal summons alleging tax evasion against the senior management and board of directors of MTN Uganda null and void.

MTN Uganda launches Christmas Promo where customers can win airtime for a year


MTN Uganda has launched a mega promotion to give back to its customers during the festive season in what will be dubbed ‘Y’ello Christmas’.

Every new customer that joins the MTN network will be entered into draw and will stand a chance to win airtime worth UShs. 10,000 every month for a year. There will be a total of 250 winners every day with a total of 10,000 winners over the next forty days. A total of a whopping UShs. 1.2 billion worth of airtime is up for grabs.

The 9th successfully completed MTN Kampala Marathon 2012 which took place on Sunday, 25th November brought together participants from both Uganda and a number of neighbouring countries. This year’s marathon was special in that it saw more winners of the top prizes from Uganda.


Alleged tax evasion at MTN Uganda: MTN files a complaint of misconduct against a Chief Magistrate


Johannesburg - MTN Uganda has lodged a formal complaint with the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in Uganda against the Chief Magistrate of the Buganda Road Magistrates Court, Sylvia Nabagala.

MTN Uganda expressed grave concern about the magistrate’s professional misconduct, evident in her contradictory rulings and disregard of due process.



MTN Uganda launches new per second international calling rates


MTN Uganda has announced new international calling rates in per second increments in what is dubbed ‘call the world in seconds’.

MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer, Ernst Fonternel reiterated that this new offer means that customers can now make international calls and only pay for what they say.


MTN Uganda re-launches MTN Zone with new discount offers for customers starting this Festive Season


MTN Uganda has re-launched MTN Zone with its dynamic discounts of up to 99% and a minimum guaranteed discount of 5% on MTN calls.

MTN Statement on alleged tax evasion case


In Mid-September, MTN Uganda discovered suspicious supply chain payments made to several service providers. The MTN forensic team and Uganda Police were engaged to investigate the suspicious transactions. This resulted in the charging of two staff members implicated in the investigation, with offences relating to fraud in the amount of UShs. 13 billion.  MTN has also made criminal complaints against the suppliers implicated and filed a civil claim against one of them  who reneged on their contractual undertaking to refund the funds misappropriated by them.

Johannesburg – MTN delivered a satisfactory set of results for the quarter ended 30 September 2012, increasing subscriber numbers by 3.8% to 182,7 million. The Group's performance was underpinned by solid operational management and the rollout of appealing value propositions despite aggressive pricing competition, regulations and economic challenges across the different markets in which the Group operates. This solid operational performance over the past quarter has enabled MTN to increase guidance for net additions for 2012 from 21.25 million to 23.70 million.

MTN Uganda has uncovered irregular payments to some service providers

Kampala - MTN Uganda has uncovered irregular payments to the sum of $3.8 million to some service providers which could be fraudulent. The matter has been reported to the National Police who are investigating further. No further comment can be made until the conclusion of the investigations.

On 12th July 2012, UMEME launched bill payments by Mobile Money together with real-time bank reconciliations. This means that customers can now avoid disconnections caused by delayed payment reconciliations. The instant payment solution launched under the banner ‘Touch Pay Solutions’, was unveiled by Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, at the Kampala Serena Hotel this morning.


MTN has partnered with Umeme to offer a more convenient electricity bill payment platform in the form of the MTN Mobile Money - Umeme Payment.

Up until now, UMEME customers would only travel short or long distances to the nearest Umeme Centre to clear their bill in order to avoid disconnection of power from their premises.

MTN contributes to Bududa victims

MTN Uganda, through the MTN Foundation, today announced a contribution of Ushs 50 million towards re-settlement efforts for victims of the landslide in Bududa, Eastern Uganda.

MTN Chief Executive Officer, Mazen Mroue, said today that the money would be handed to the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) to purchase Non-Food items for 312 of the 450 families affected by the landslide.
